"What'll Ya Have? What'll Ya Have?"

That is the drawl-injected question asked of you (twice real quick if you've got an energetic cashier) when you step to the counter at The Varsity, an American fast-food icon that stands on Spring Street, in between our temp housing and Ron's office. ( Full disclosure: I ate there Tuesday on the way in for the overnight shift) It is the biggest drive-in eatery in the world, so they claim, and the inside is pretty spacious too. The food is basic: burgers w/chili, hot dogs w/chili, onion rings, etc. The place is gorgeous, if you like chrome, meat, Americana and a building with a soul. In one corner tourists sit huddled, wolfing down hot dogs and nursing Cokes. In another, a large group of large men (car salesmen or evangelicals on tour, I couldn't figure out which) make quick work of a stack of burgers, cracking barely discernable jokes between bites. There are two layers of parking, car-hop service for the drive-in crowd, and some of the best no-bean chili you could drown a hot dog in. I'm going to go back and take more pics of this magical place (maybe a day-in-the-life photo-set), but here's a few now.
