Summer's First Date

Summer went on her first date with Neil, the boy next door. He's adorable, plus he has a car and he can drive. And he's only 4! Kids these days.

Julia's Garden

Julia is having a great time in her new garden. Ron rototilled for 4 hours on Saturday to prep the ground. Now we've transplanted some new chard, thyme, rosemary, sage and pansies (which are edible). More to come.

The Occultation of Neptune by the Moon

It's rare and it happened tonight (Friday, Sept. 2, 2008). Neptune is the farthest planet in our solar system (sorry Pluto), and normally it doesn't share a sight line between us, the moon and itself _ but tonight it did. I took some pictures, for posterity and perhaps a space on a wall in Summer's room, and you can't tell it's happening, but it is. Anyway, the moon looked pretty and somewhere, just grazing its edge is bluish light from Neptune _ 2.68 billion miles away.

Yellow Daisy Festival

We went to the Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain Park late last week. It was ... interesting. Lots of craft going on.

The Stone Mountain is seen through the trees. It is the largest piece of exposed granite on Earth. Bigger than El Capitan, though not as tall or well known. Also, there are three figures of the Confederate States of America carved into the side of it: Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis. No word yet on whether or not they'll add Jeff Foxworthy.
